Anti Virus Programs: myth or truth

The first bug was discovered in a mainframe computer in Boston, USA. A moth died of electric and brought down the entire mainframe of the school. thus the word "bug" was born as a computer term.

Anti-virus programs are born out of the necessary evil to counter computer virus, which could destroy your last summer photos, your first born video to spread the same damage to other computers worldwide.

Many users are thought that they must have an anti-virus program on their computer. .... Says who, guess.... the anti-virus companies like symantec, Trend micro etc.... and stop there.

Is there truth in using Anti-virus programs or do they do more damage than protect in the first place....
