As network/security engineer in my company, we are evaluating 4 different anti spam appliance. They are Ironport, Barracuda, Ironmail and Mxtreme. Based on vendor, each say their one is the best.
Reason for doing a change is spam now comes in two flavors, the normal one which is more detectable by Realtime Blacklist (RBL) and the more harder to detect, images with email. It is not uncommon to see images embedded inside emails. Since outlook 2000 start allowing html based emails, users have created very colorful emails.
We will start with Ironport first and share its technical strength and weakness with all.

Plus Point
1) Configure and forget appliance. Does not need any administrative once box is running
2) No false positive encountered during POC period
3) Detect most if not all violations correctly
4) Report from Mail flow central is informative enough for us to answer any user issue
5) All Quarantine stored on appliance; saving need to have separate storage requirements
6) Able to hand both incoming and outgoing mails effectively and efficiently
Minus Point
1) Very basic reporting found on appliance; more details need to install Ironport free Mail flow central
2) Detail reporting using Mail flow central needs a separate PC with XP OS 512MB and min 10GB of hard disk
3) When license about to expire, no warning is given in advance
4) If network is too congested, connections may be dropped (Resolve by using traffic shaping)
Summary
Ironport prove itself as a setup and forget appliance. It is able to detect and remove image-based spam with no false positive. Its interface is able simple to operate despite being complex to understand in the beginning.
The senderbase database used by Ironport allowed real-time detection of Spam and its related activities. Its reporting however is limited (to be resolved by Ironport in the second quarter of 2007).
On the whole, it is a very good product and stands out
