Some time ago, a friend of mine asked me for some help. He needs to encrypt some data on his PC and does not want people to see it. Of course being friends and doing IT day in day out, I helped him to test two software which i hope viewers can take points from.
First of all, the solution has to be free and user friendly. As much as my friend is a business owner, he too needs to look after the bottom line. User friendly is a must as my friend is not a IT geek like yours truly. I shared with him truecrypt and GPGwin.
For GPGwin, I was able to encrypt the excel files from .xls to .pgp format. Since it is signed and encrypted, it can be send to other users and decrypted using the keys generated As for truecrypt, I was able to encrypt an entire folder and save files into it and open the files directly in it. once done i just close the folder and it will not be shown to anyone.
They both work slightly differently and suitable for certain type of situation. Forfiles on a folder, the truecrypt will do better. As for GPGwin, it is more for sharing of files between users in encryption
To download truecrypt, go to www.truecrypt.org
To download GPGwin, go to www.gpg4win.org
(Always scan downloaded packages for virus & spyware. Even though these are official sites, it is better to be safe than sorry)
