As an IT purchaser, I am always eager to spend the least and do the most with my budget (sounds dangerously familiar to my CFO statement). I also spend some time as part of my job to evaluate open source AKA free software for use either for opening a zip file to protecting a notebook from prying eyes.
This is a new section of the blog where I will share with my readers some of the software, its features and usage. I will start with two software that I tried and currently still working.
One is the Izarc archiving software. It has grown to be one of my favourite archiving solution ever. For one, it is free, so no need to spend $. Second, it has open about all possible archives from zip, tar, gzip, jar to tbz, 7-zip, arj, arc etc. I tested it on a local user (without local admin user rights) and Izarc continues to perform wonderfully. I tried 7-zip and tugzip. Tugzip needs admin user rights to run smoothly and 7-zip, well, it does not do arc well (users start using winarc instead and worse, it needs $$). Winzip used to be a freeware (we just refused to pay it to convert from shareware) so the Izarc serves all its purposes well and good. (website to get izarc)
Second is the personal firewall comodo. I used to pay-to-use sunbelt kerio firewall and it works fine until the license expired and no more funds to purchase it. I came across comodo 2 years back and write it off as too complex to understand and use. Ok i admit i did not test it well enough and glad i am able to test it 2 years later. It is simple to use (after using kerio for 2 years, any firewall also looks simple) and understand. We can choose to allow a program to run as an updater/ installer; it is one way to allow minimal dispute to write to the windows program folders. Its IPS is also well and easy to understand and configure. Its default is in 'clean PC' mode. Comodo personal firewall is free and with a anti-virus like Avast home edition, provides a reasonable security to home, office users alike. (to download Comodo Personal Firewall)
If you have any software u wish for me to evaluate, simply drop me a email at mistyhallow dot gmail dot com and I will try my best to get a review on it
