There are many notebooks out in the market, and they target specific market group. Being a IT purchaser for my company, I am exposed to these notebooks and has been frequently advised on them.
As in any purchase, the first thing to take care of is the budget. It depends the notebook specifications and keep your needs and wants in check. Second will be for whom the notebook is for. Ladies tend to want to light weight (1.5kg and below) and can accept certain trade-off in terms of performance. Guys on the other hand prefer performance and increasingly, also take to like lightweight notebooks. But unless there is a clear difference between these two specifications, most males will still take performance over weight.
Thanks to Asus, there is now a hybrid of notebooks called UMPC (ultra mobile Personal Computer) or netbook. They are powered by new Intel Atom based processor which are low powered and less heat generating, weighs less than 1.2kg and offer a screen size of 7" to 10.4". Most of such users are students who may not need a full featured notebook, ladies/ guys who travel often and has more than one PC at home/office to geeks who just want to get the latest 'toys'.
Of course there are more players now than Asus in the UMPC areana. They include the Acer Aspire One, the HP mini-note, the Fujitsu Lifebook U series , Asus Eepc range, MSI Wind, Axioo Pico and Kohjinsha series of UMPC.
