Daily Life: Whats Next

This 2 weeks has been very busy for me. Firstly we have 2 power failure on Monday (right after CNY) which cause my phone system to go down after the second power failure. I have no choice but to seek professional help; the vedict was what i fear most, change to a new one. My old one was a philips IS180 ISDN-30 PABX. Worst of all the whole PABX is sold to a new owner (previously belong to philips) 5 years ago so there is no more spare parts available for repair.

Luck my vendor whom has been working with us for a long while, was willing to cut his profit margin and charge a reasonable rate for the new system and installation. The installation took 3 days and was faster than expected. My team was able to deploy the phones earlier (everything needs to change, the system plus the phones only the cables remains) so the vendor spent less time doing the setup and can focus on getting the PABX up.

Then come the bombshell on Sunday. There was a power shutdown on Sat at 5pm so we brought down our server before hand. On Sunday, I was supposed to on the servers up. All but 2 servers are having issues: one was my file transfer server which has no display while my main server which also house my mail server, got one hard disk spoilt. Luckily we are running on RAID 5 so a single hard disk failure will not caused much damage yet.

The power failure has enforced the need for IT investment to be continued been made and proper setup will keep us safe. By running RAID 5, we will waste one hard disk space but in return, our infrastructure can withstand a certain degree of failure. Now these few weeks will be planning for upgrades to be in place in case the servers also go down one by one.
